The project of the Atificial Intelligence National Laboratory (MILAB), established in 2020, has been successfully completed. From 2022 onward, the initiative continued as a large-scale research and development program supported by HUF 9.4 billion in Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) funding. The program was built on extensive national and international collaboration, involving six universities, three research institutes, and two public administration bodies. The consortium’s primary objective was to strengthen artificial intelligence research in Hungary and to expand its fields of application.
The project has yielded significant results across scientific, industrial, and societal domains. Practical solutions have been developed in a wide range of areas, including the optimization of energy networks, the improvement of manufacturing processes, the digitalization of public administration, telecommunications, and medical diagnostics. Through several hundred scientific publications, new patents, international collaborations, and industrial applications, the program has substantially contributed to the consolidation of the Hungarian AI ecosystem while establishing a sustainable research and innovation network.
Within the project, ELTE Centre for Social Sciences achieved notable results, particularly in the fields of text mining and natural language processing. Methodological and infrastructural developments were implemented that enable the automated analysis, thematic exploration, and intelligent retrieval of large-scale, potentially multilingual text corpora, thereby facilitating the international-level utilization of previously difficult-to-access research resources.
In addition, an innovative digital data collection platform was developed, integrating active and passive data collection methods and opening new perspectives for the real-time analysis of social phenomena. The Centre also played a key role in examining the legal and regulatory aspects of artificial intelligence, with particular emphasis on the European Union framework and fundamental rights challenges. Furthermore, it implemented a comprehensive training and outreach program, contributing to the preparedness of the research community and promoting the responsible use of AI through courses, workshops, and international lecture series.
